SEED Trust - South Africa
The SEED (Sustainable Enterprise for Enabling Development) Trust was established in 1993 as a response to the poverty, unemployment, conflict and inequity that affect the lives of millions of people in South Africa, and which constitutes a threat to the well-being of society as well as to other life. SEED was formed as a Trust to work towards developing a healthy and equitable society in balance with the natural environment.
SEED is working nationally on issues of primary healthcare, including HIV/AIDS and community participation processes, ecological agriculture and inter-governmental co-operation. The beneficiaries of this work are small scale farmers, grass roots community groups and NGOs working in primary healthcare.
The SEED Trust works with men’s groups in KwaZulu Natal; they are usually the perpetrators of gender based violence, and working only with women often provokes more gender violence unless men are assisted to find new expressions of their masculinity. A focus on men is a different way of allowing space for women to establish their strengths.
The work of the Trust is conducted by board members, volunteers and project leaders. The SEED Trust is also a founding member of the African Biodiversity Network (ABN).
