Fundação Gaia, established in Porto Alegre in Brazil, focusses on environmental education, the promotion of socially compatible soft technologies such as regenerative agriculture (ecological), decentralized energy production and alternative sanitation.

Fundação Gaia was born out of the desires and concerns of its founder and president, José Lutzenberger, to expand the range of solutions available to combat Brazil's environmental problems. To this end, the organization supports the deployment of alternative solutions that lead to a more environmentally and socially sustainable world.

The organisation has a beautiful field site, known as Rincão Gaia ("Gaia Corner"), an area of 30 hectares situated on an ancient basalt quarry. For over a decade, Rincão Gaia has been an example of reclamation in practice. In the place of excavated quarry pits, there are now lakes surrounded by a large variety of plants typical of arid environments which, along with the rocks, form gardens of rare beauty. Rincão Gaia is also inhabited by several wild species. Moreover, the location is a centre of environmental education and dissemination of regenerative agriculture. Regenerative agriculture promotes healthy food production, the creation of closed loops to generate inputs from waste and the application of conservative practices in the field of nature.

Lara Lutzenberger is a biologist, environmental activist and daughter of José Lutzenberger. She continues her father's legacy and is the Director of Fundação Gaia. Aside from running Rincão Gaia, Lara provides environmental consultancy, assisting municipalities and states in implementing sustainable development.

'Lutz', as José Lutzenberger was affectionately known, was involved with the Gaia since the early days and one of our first Gaia Associates. We have supported the development of Rincão Gaia, and continue to promote the excellent work of this practical learning centre for regenerative agriculture.
