Seeds of Freedom - The Takeover of Seed
Posted by Rowan, 21st October 2011
We're thrilled to release the trailer for a NEW film, Seeds of Freedom, to be launched in 2012 with our partner the African Biodiversity Network. The film shows that global agriculture has changed more in the past 50 years than in the previous 10,000. Great conflicts have arisen as a result of this, but nowhere is this conflict more poignant than in the story of seed. The film explores the history of the corporate takeover of seed, and the impact that this is having on communities across the world. The loss of indigenous seed goes hand in hand with the loss of biodiversity, the loss of cultural traditions and practices, the loss of livelihoods and the loss of independence in agriculture.
This film emerged out of a Climate-Seed-Knowledge training, which took place with African Biodiversity Network partners in Ethiopia at the close of 2010. The full version of Seeds of Freedom will be launched in February 2012 with narration from the internationally recognised actor, Jeremy Irons.
Thanks to all those involved in the making of the film so far, and particularly to Vandana Shiva and Dr Melaku Worede for their powerful interviews.
This film is co-produced by the African Biodiversity Network (visit their website) and The Gaia Foundation. With thanks to the contributions of Navdanya International and the Source Project.
Camera: Jason Taylor, Jess Phillimore and Damian Prestidge. Produced by Jess Phillimore
