How we work
The world...changes as networks of relationships form among people who discover they share a common cause and vision of what's possible. When separate, local efforts connect with each other as networks, then strengthen as communities of practice, suddenly and surprisingly a new system emerges at a greater level of scale.Margaret Wheatley on 'Emergence'
Regenerating Ecological and Community Resilience
In collaboration with our partners, we work with communities who are committed to reviving and enhancing their cultural and biological diversity, which is the foundation of resilience, especially now in the context of climate change. We do this by supporting communities to build on their own knowledge, to strengthen their cohesion, livelihoods and self-governance and to regenerate their ecosystems and local economies. Visit the Communities, Ecosystems and Governance section to find out more.
Advocating for Solutions that are Viable and Just
We advocate for culturally diverse ways of life which are ecologically sound, as well as socially and economically just. This is the basis for human 'right livelihood'; where human needs are met in a way which is also regenerative for the Earth. This also means challenging the "false solutions" to climate change, which tend to be large-scale, short-term, technical fixes, driven by profit and without consideration of their ethical, social or ecological impact. Visit the Forests, Food and Climate section to find out more about both the challenges we face, and the positive pathways to finding viable and just solutions.
Creating Experiential Learning Opportunities & Nurturing a New Generation of Responsible Leaders
We believe that we learn best through potent experiences and that life is an ongoing journey of discovery. We work to create a range of learning opportunities to foster innovation and fresh thinking - from community exchanges to mentoring aspiring leaders by exposing them to inspiring and challenging experiences. Gaia is part of a growing network of community based learning centres, providing culturally and ecologically diverse settings for holistic learning.
