Choose veggies in season – eat simple, tasty meals that haven’t travelled halfway around the world. This helps the local economy and the climate. For a list check out www.greatbritishkithcen.co.uk.

Start a Slow Food evening with friends to share good, local, organic food. Sample local juices, beers, ciders and wines too. Find out the philosophy behind it at www.slowfood.com.

Cut down on meat – 1kg of beef requires 20.9 sq metres of land, compared to 0.5 sq metres for 1 kg of fruit and vegetables. Protein can come from other sources. The Vegan Society (www.vegansociety.com) has some useful facts and figures on the nutritional and environmental benefits

Choose your fish carefully – so many are overfished that entire species are under threat. Ask at the restaurant where their fish comes from. At the moment linecaught Pacific cod is fine, but Atlantic cod is not. Get updates from www.fishonline.org.

Get a wormery – we think they are great, even for people with only a balcony. Guy says, “the kit is simple to use – it even comes with worms, although if a friend already has one, they can give you a few and you can grow your own! It doesn’t smell and you can feed them all your kitchen scraps”. See www.wigglywigglers.co.uk for more information.

Grow your own herbs and try some vegetable varieties too. A wide selection of organic seeds can be found from the HDRA’s Organic Gardening Catalogue, see www.organiccatalog.com. Explore organic, permaculture and biodynamic gardening methods.

Stop shopping at supermarkets. In the UK Tesco’s has 30% of the grocer market (Guardian, 30 June 2005), which accounts for £1 of every £8 spent in British shops. Support the smaller shops, asking them to order the things you want but can’t find and visit local farmers’ markets.
