If your neck of the woods seems a bit quiet on all this eco-living malarkey – then it’s time to get active. Contact your local councilor for local issues, your MP (www.locata,co,uk/commons/) for local, national and some international issues, and your MEP for international campaigns. Writing a letter is more effective than emailing, faxing or sending off a campaign postcard. Many are obliged to write a response to a letter. Address: MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA

Recruit a friend. This doubles the amount of energy spent campaigning, and having support means you are less likely to give up half way.

Set up a group or email list on a topic that interests or concerns you – good ideas should be spread far and wide! Friends of the Earth have local groups and can provide support and funding in setting up new groups, speak to Claudia Sartori on 020 7490 1555 or email localgroups@foe.co.uk

Sign up to cyber-activism on different issues. Kate suggests starting with Greenpeace (www.act.greenpeace.org) but there are many others. They usually request you to write a letter to a company, government or Minister, demanding changes to policy. They can also ask you to help volunteer at festivals, fundraise, lobby Mps in person, attend or give workshops etc.

Live the greener life! You will be healthier, happier, and often quids in, if you help conserve the Earth’s resources – making the Earth happier too!
