Diversity is the richness of variety of all species and their habitats across the planet. It is that which makes the world a place of unending beauty and intrigue, and it is the basis of our planet's resilience.

As we enter a time of climate crises and huge biodiversity loss, there has never been a more critical moment to turn our attention to the resilience of Nature and people. There has never been a more critical time to protect and to revive the diversity of all species and cultures.

Gaia's mission is to regenerate healthy, diverse ecosystems, and to support local communities across the world to govern themselves according to their traditional knowledge and practices.

Through long-term partnerships we work with individuals, organisations and networks in Africa, South America, Asia and Europe. Together we have helped to raise the voices of some of today's most eminent environmental change-makers and pioneers. For instance, Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai, ecological activist Vandana Shiva, and Skoll Awardee Martin von Hildebrand. We believe in nurturing strong relationships and have an ethos of 'affectionate alliances' across our expanding network.

We stand especially with indigenous and rural communities, supporting their traditions, their values and their rights. Indigenous peoples have an intimate relationship with the land from which they originate. Great wisdom accumulates over time through this longevity of living in the same place, with ecological knowledge passing from one generation to the next. This innate understanding and respect for Nature is what will protect our planet's most vital ecosystems.
