Romy Fraser
Romy
Fraser trained as a teacher in the 1960’s, travelled for a year
or so before living in a Scottish commune. After having her first daughter,
she worked for 6 years in a ‘free school’, believing that
education was more to do with learning from experience, than remembering
a series of facts. By 1981 she had 2 daughters and ran literacy programmes
in South London.
Romy started Neal’s Yard Remedies, an alternative pharmacy in Covent
Garden, with a small loan guaranteed by a friend. It became an inspiration
for those wanting to find out about natural medicine. The company was
sold 25 years later with 35 shops and worldwide sales, and in 2008 Romy
was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE). She is now in the process
of setting up an educational centre and energy business.
Nic Marks
Nic
Marks is Head of the Centre for Well-being at the New Economics Foundation,
NEF. He has a degree in Management Studies from Cambridge University,
an MSc from Lancaster University and a postgraduate diploma in Change
Agent Skills and Strategies from the University of Surrey. He is a qualified
psychotherapist and a member of the International Society for Quality
of Life Studies.
Nic was the co-author of the first edition of the UK Index of Sustainable
Economics Welfare, which NEF first published in 1994. He is also a consultant
to a project sponsored by the Government of Bhutan on how to construct
indicators for assessing Gross National Happiness in Bhutan.
Edward
Posey trained as an RAF pilot for National Service, in the late 1940s,
and flew for the Reserves. He studied at the London School of Economics,
then after a brief period working for the family business in the City
of London, embarked on an aviation career. After many successful years
in aviation, Edward began to question the social responsibility and ethics
of the business world in which he was involved. Consultancy work soon
developed into promoting a more holistic approach to business, and the
channelling of human potential towards a more socially responsible path.
Edward has dedicated over 30 years entirely to philanthropic work. In
1984, he co-founded the Gaia Foundation and provided his home in north
London as the office. He is also Trustee of Findhorn Foundation in Scotland,
the Wilderness Leadership School in South Africa, an active member of
Social Venture Network Europe, and Member of the Executive Development
Committee for the Natural History Museum, London. In 2007, Edward was
awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for 'services to the Gaia
Foundation'. His compassion and positive spirit have been vital for many
people and initiatives. More
detail and quotes from Gaia
Associates and friends.
