Charlotte
joined Gaia in 1998. As well as assisting the Director in overall office
management, she has been responsible for developing activities for the
Gaia Learning Centre and is now focussed on publications. One of her passions
is to develop learning opportunities for city-based children that will
inspire ecological understanding and feelings for the Earth. Charlotte
also studies Art and Design.
With
an international background (Filipina, Spanish and Canadian parentage,
born in the UK, grew up in Kenya and Cyprus, and having worked in Brazil,
South Africa and Canada), Teresa is a strong believer in the value of
biological and cultural diversity. It was while living in Brazil in 1998
that the links between global politics, economics, poverty, access to
land, farmers' rights, sustainable agriculture and biodiversity became
clear to her, and set her on her present path. She joined Gaia in 2001,
where she was pleased to be getting back to her African “roots”.
She is information and advocacy officer on GM/ IPRs for the Africa Biodiversity
Network and speaks passable French, Portuguese and Spanish.
Coming
from a business background, Glen joined Gaia in 1989 as Gaia's financial
bookkeeper, and has remained a cornerstone in Gaia's accounts team ever
since. At the time, Glen was keen to move away from the corporate world,
and found great synergy between his own interests and the work of Gaia.
Over the years Glen has met with many of Gaia's partners and continues
to enjoy the experiences and knowledge they share when they pass through
London. He has a particular interest in traditional medicine and is always
keen to learn more about the fascinating work that is going on around
this.
Katy
started working for the Gaia Foundation in May 2003 after a chequered
history in the world of the Arts, media, but mostly the corporate hum
drum. For her, starting at Gaia was like returning home, and she has played
a key role in coordinating the African Biodiversity Network. She feels
passionately about, and has huge respect for, the diversity of life in
all its forms. One of her missions in life is to stand in the way of the
supermarket monopoly and their attempt at world domination! Katy is currently
working part-time.
Whilst
visiting in Australia in 1992, Guy spent some time working for the Wilderness
Society took part in campaign work to protect forest areas of outstanding
natural beauty. He later gained a degree in European Studies and Spanish,
followed by a Masters in Area Studies (Latin America) from the Institute
of Latin American Studies, London, with a thesis on the COAMA programme
and traditional indigenous authorities of the Colombian Amazon. Guy has
experience in publishing, journalism and EFL teaching, and is fluent in
Spanish. He joined Gaia in 2002 where he is main area of work is research,
campaigns and support to international projects.
Born
near Johannesburg, South Africa, Liz Hosken was active from a young age
in both environmental issues and the anti-apartheid movement. She was
exiled to the UK in her early 20s, and co-founded the Gaia Foundation
in 1984. As Director of Gaia she works with pioneers and visionaries for
ecological and social justice. In 1991, Liz Hosken received the Jameson
Award and, on behalf of Gaia, has received the Schumacher Award and a
One World Award for media work on biodiversity related issues. She is
a fellow of the Findhorn Foundation and advisor to the Goldman Environmental
Prize.
Vicky
is our new Office Administrator. More detail coming soon.
Carine
joined Gaia as a legal research officer in March 2008 following a research
internship on a River Thames project. She is keen to promote the transformation
of law to better respect and protect the Earth and its inhabitants. After
graduating with an LLB, Carine completed a Masters in environmental law
with a thesis on the Aarhus Convention and environmental justice. She
also gained research experience with the Environmental Law Foundation
(U.K), United Nations Institute for Training and Research (Switzerland)
and IUCN (Germany), and co-organised the first public interest environmental
law conference in the UK. Born in the UK to Mauritian parents Carine values
the importance of cultural diversity and has good understanding of French.
Sarah
is responsible for the Gaia Learning Centre. More detail coming soon.
Dave
joined Gaia in September 2006. He began life in Zambia in Africa and has
always enjoyed the outdoors as long as he can remember. Most of his education
and early work experience was in South Africa where he qualified as a
Chartered Accountant. He has always been interested in leading a spiritual
life, and since coming to England he has worked in large organisations
but always felt the need for a smaller family orientated work environment.
Dave has a particular interest in the teaching of Krishanmurti and trying
to live a sane life.
Born
and raised in Cornwall, Fiona grew with a passion for coastal walking.
She joined Gaia in 1992, with a degree in Latin American studies and a
desire to work on indigenous and community rights, ecological restoration
and sustainable livelihoods. Some years later, she has pioneered the concept
of ‘'distance-working'’for Gaia, gained a Masters in Protected
Landscape Management, worked with indigenous and community groups, NGOs
and policy-makers in Ecuador and Colombia, and been resident in Colombia
since 1998.
